When I was 16, Chip got me David Bowie’s ‘Ziggy Stardust’ on cassette — I think for my birthday. Within six months, I had ever Bowie album, even the bad ones. Living in London nine years ago, I never considered tracking down where the album cover shot was taken. I’m ashamed. It’s on a appealing little alley street called Hedden St, which has become the de-facto destination for Bowie pilgrims.
This Google StreetView shot shows the reverse view of the cover. Bowie was standing just beyond the bloke on the phone to the left, back to us.
Around the corner to the left is where a red telephone box stood, and possibly stands still. Bowie stood in it for the back cover shot, and a newer version of it was still there in 1998.
Lots of fun details here. Including how K West wasn’t code for ‘quest.’
