It is charming. A day for donuts. And if you look more closely at its past — including this funny video on the National Donuts Day website — you see it’s not a cynical ploy by famed donut chains, but linked with Salvation Army treats for soldiers in WWI.

However, per the Wikipedia entry, with no linked source, one Salvation Army worker Margaret Sheldon, wrote of one busy day: “Today I made 22 pies, 300 doughnuts, 700 cups of coffee.”

Based on her tally, shouldn’t it be National Cup of Coffee Day then?

And anyway what about the donut holes?
